A Fry up all within 20 km of gathering ingredient’s from Skibbereen
Where ever I have lived or visited in the world be it New Zealand, Australia, Dublin, UK, Germany or Skibbereen, I have always loved a big Breakfast especially after a few beverage’s after a night out.
These days I appreciate the fry up a lot more as the quality of ingredients is so good. When purchasing your breakfast items in your local Supervalu, the huge thing for me is most of the components come from West Cork Food Producers that only live up the road and produced on their own properties.
I have always said that we are spoiled in West Cork and I put my hand up to say we are, but always very excited to go into my local Supervalu to shop around for my local products.
So by using Skibbereen as a base let’s create a fry up and discover our local producers and products by not going outside a 20k radius.
Caroline Murphy – West Cork Eggs
If you’re looking for free range eggs in West Cork then Caroline Murphy is the hen to talk to. Based outside Rosscarbery her award winning company has been laying since 2009 with over 3000 free range hens on her farm.
She has also won Blas na hÉireann Gold Award in 2018 and you can find who eggs in most Cork Supervalu’s and other independent retail outlets.
There’s nothing better than West Cork Eggs and the difference in taste is second to none.
Nathan Wall – Baltimore Bacon
For me this is the nicest bacon I have ever had, not just for taste but for texture and health benefits.
Nathan stated farming pigs 13 years ago. The bacon is cured by hand, using just organic sea salt and natural ingredients with no added water, no nitrites, nitrates or phosphates.
This is Artisan Dry Cured Bacon, West Cork pork, Atlantic sea salt, black pepper, molasses, raw cane sugar, spices, and natural oak smoke.
Baltimore Bacon is available in local stores in West Cork.
Francine O’Regan – Coolagh Bakes
An old saying that I was brought up with is “Sing for your supper”, will this lady not only can sing like an angel but makes some of the best bread you will ever get your hands on.
Francine has a great little business in Ballydehob and bakes Spelt bread, Sourdough, Brown soda bread, Granary Rye Bread as well as scones and lots of cakes and treats.
Francine’s bread is available from Camiers of Ballydehob. Spar service station, Cork Rd, Skibbereen. Drinagh Co-OP, Aughadown and she also do a weekly pop up shop on Wednesday’s at Levis’ Bar, Ballydehob.
Clonakilty Black Pudding
One of West Cork icon food companies that not only is local but a nationwide household brand with international markets.
Ever since I came to West Cork I fill in love with these products and the idea of eating pig’s blood would not appeal to me. But the moment I landed in Skibbereen 25 years ago the thought of horrible pudding turned into a Sunday delight every week almost and properties that give a high in protein product.
The new production facility built in Clonakilty in 2017 producers its great Sausages, Black and White Pudding, joints of bacon and so much more, which makes our 20km radius breakfast list.
Will there we have it, a West Cork Breakfast with in 20km radius of Skibbereen that myself and my family have pretty much every Sunday.
Quality food companies in West Cork that give us something special and a great piece of mind that we are supporting local.
